The British are now sending in excess of ONE BILLION texts per week. This is 25% more than this time last year and the same as a whole years worth in 1999!

There are so many tools and applications now available for SMS. I can SMS from skype on my computer and recipients reply to mobile number. If I was in to it, I could post my twitter updates via SMS. I can subscribe to sports scores. I can vote (and get charged but not counted) for the likes of ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday Takeaway’. My bank sends SMS alerts to my phone and sadly I also get SMS spam every now and then.

At the moment the majority of SMS is ‘opt in’ and welcome i.e. from friends. Perhaps mobile phone operators will soon need to install spam blocking systems to protect their clients - especially to stop receiving unwanted SMS when you are overseas! Imagine paying for spam?!
